Homeowner’s Guide to Going Solar

Use this guide after installation to understand monitoring, service support, incentive mechanics, warranty terms, documentation, referrals, solar billing and the contact lists that help keep your project moving.

Service Support After Installation

The majority of issues can be resolved remotely. If an on-site visit is required, Rooftop Power will schedule and address the problem promptly.

Although most on-site services are free, please confirm any potential fees when scheduling the appointment. Rooftop Power carefully selects manufacturers and works with partners that offer strong warranties. If your equipment needs replacement, you may incur no cost for the equipment itself, depending on the warranty term specified in your installation agreement.

Labor costs associated with the service visit may be charged by RTP depending on the warranty year term. During inclement weather, such as snow or heavy rain, solar power generation may decrease. Rooftop Power does not remove snow from panels, but we have noticed that snow generally melts off solar panels faster than from non-solar roof areas.

How to Monitor Your Solar System Performance

Understanding how to monitor your solar system is important for efficient operation and for knowing what your system is producing.

Start monitoring like a pro by using the monitoring platform assigned to your equipment.

  • Enphase
  • SolarEdge
  • Tesla

How Net Metering Works

With Net Metering, you receive one-for-one credit based on your solar production and household consumption. Net Metering homeowners are classified in two categories.

If you allocate credits to another account, the corresponding dollar value will be deducted from the total NEM credit value for the other listed accounts.

  • Net Exporter: Your solar system generates more energy than you consume. You will receive a bill with a 0 kWh charge and a credit to your account for the excess energy supplied to the grid.
  • Net Importer: You consume more energy than your solar system generates. You will be billed by your utility provider for any excess energy used beyond what your solar system generates.

Performance Based Incentives

Your utility provider will assess the dollar value of your solar energy production using your Performance Based Incentive, or PBI, rate for the billing period.

The utility will deduct a portion of this value from your bill and pay the remainder to you by either issuing a check or arranging a direct deposit. If you choose to allocate bill credits to another account, the corresponding dollar value will be deducted from the total PBI and applied to those accounts.

Connected Solutions

Connected Solutions is performance based, like other incentives. Homeowners receive a fixed incentive rate each summer and winter for the first five years of the program.

Based on your battery’s performance, you will receive a check at the end of each participating season for the power exported to the grid. For details on summer schedules for the incentive program, please consult your utility provider.

Warranties and System Specs

Your installation agreement controls the specific warranty terms for your project. The items below summarize the customer guide language so you know where each protection applies.

  • Roofing Penetration Warranty: According to the terms of your installation agreement, RTP guarantees that the roof penetration from the solar installation is covered under warranty for a specified number of years. If there is a leak caused by the solar installation, our team will repair and service the roof leak at no cost to you.
  • Roofing Penetration Warranty Radius: The warranty specifically covers a three (3) inch radius around the penetration as determined by our expert contractors.
  • Roofing Penetration Warranty Condition: The warranty is only valid if the work performed by Rooftop Power is not altered or tampered with in any way.
  • Workmanship Warranty: Rooftop Power guarantees the quality of our work. Qualified professionals review, build and install each project. If there are issues such as loose equipment or wiring mistakes after installation, Rooftop Power will rectify them at no extra cost.
  • Workmanship Warranty Roof Coverage: Based on the number of years specified in your installation agreement, RTP provides a warranty for the roof penetration from the solar installation.
  • Limited Labor Warranty: All RTP customers receive 2 years of system maintenance with no added labor cost. If you need your system repaired, equipment replaced or similar service, RTP will cover the labor cost for the first 2 years after installation.
  • Service Work: Services beyond the scope of other warranties are subject to a fee. Rooftop Power offers additional services such as repairs, upgrades and maintenance. Our team will assess your needs and provide a quote.
  • Panel, Inverter and Battery Warranties: Manufacturer warranties apply according to the manufacturer warranty terms for your equipment.

Documentation For Your Tax Return

If you are unsure about the documentation required for your tax return, please be aware that Rooftop Power does not offer tax or legal advice. Always seek guidance from your tax advisor.

Generally, your installation agreement with Rooftop Power should be sufficient. If your tax advisor requires additional documentation or if you cannot locate your installation agreement, contact our support team and we will provide the necessary information.

The federal residential solar tax credit applies only to systems placed in service by the end of 2025. If your system was installed in 2025 or earlier, the documentation guidance above applies to your return. For newer projects there is no federal credit to claim, and current loans are quoted on the full system cost with no assumed credit. We recommend consulting your tax advisor and lender for specific details.

System Add-Ons

If you are looking to expand your current system, contact Rooftop Power customer support for assistance.

  • Additional panels
  • Backup storage, generator or battery
  • EV chargers
  • Consumption meters
  • Critter guards
  • Snow guards
  • Skirts

Referral Program Policy

When you refer a friend, neighbor or family member to Rooftop Power and they mention your name at the start of their project, you will be eligible for a referral bonus.

Once their solar installation is complete, you will receive your $500 referral bonus within approximately two weeks. This is our way of saying thank you for spreading the word about our services and helping others embrace sustainable energy solutions.

Timeline On Solar Utility Bills

After your solar system is approved and activated by your utility provider with Net Metering, you will see solar credits on your next bill.

For REGrowth homeowners, it may take up to two billing cycles for the generation meter to appear on your statements, but all generation credits will be applied from the authorization date.

If it has been more than two billing cycles, or if you have questions about the incentive program, billing, compensation for exported energy or credit allocation, we have been advised by your utility provider to contact them directly.

Billing statements can be confusing. If you have questions or concerns about your bill, we recommend getting in touch with your utility provider directly. While Rooftop Power is happy to assist with inquiries, our ability to resolve or advise on billing issues is limited. Your utility company has the necessary information and documentation to address billing-related questions.
