Every home is served by Rhode Island Energy, and those rates have climbed steadily in recent years, which is exactly why more homeowners are locking in their own production. Through net metering, the power your system makes beyond what your home uses is sent back to the grid, and Rhode Island Energy credits your account for it.
The state also runs two separate programs, the Renewable Energy Growth performance tariff and the Renewable Energy Fund up-front grant. They cannot be combined, and eligibility depends on your home and system. We walk you through which one fits before we ever design a system.

For most Rhode Island homeowners, going solar starts with net metering. Every home in the state is served by Rhode Island Energy, and when your panels produce more electricity than the house is using, that surplus flows back onto the grid. Rhode Island Energy credits your account for it at the retail rate, the same rate you pay for power, so a kilowatt hour you send out on a long June afternoon is worth a kilowatt hour you pull back on a dark December evening. Those credits roll forward month to month, building a cushion through the strong summer that you draw down over the winter. Once a year the account reconciles, which is why we size a system to match your full year of usage rather than any single month.
Rhode Island also runs a second path called Renewable Energy Growth, or REG. Instead of crediting the power you send back, REG is a performance tariff: Rhode Island Energy pays you a fixed rate for every kilowatt hour your system produces over a set contract term, and that payment is billed separately from your normal usage. You choose net metering or REG when you enroll, and the two are not combined. Which one comes out ahead depends on your rate, your roof and how much of your own power you use during the day.
On top of those, the Renewable Energy Fund, administered through Rhode Island Commerce, offers grants that can offset part of the upfront cost on a qualifying project. Programs like this open and close and carry their own eligibility rules, so we never quote a guaranteed dollar figure. What we do is tell you honestly what your home may qualify for and walk you through it in plain terms.
