Statewide Coverage

Rooftop Power Serves Newport, Rhode Island

Rooftop Power is a Warwick, Rhode Island installer, and Newport is part of the state we work in every week. The same in-house electrical and roofing crews that handle our other Rhode Island projects handle Newport homes, from the first roof review to the day the system is switched on.

We have been based in Warwick since 2017, we are BBB A+ accredited, and we are rated 4.8 stars on Google across 897 reviews. Across Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut we have undertaken 4,000+ projects, solar and roofing together.

Newport adds one step that most Rhode Island towns do not: a local Historic District Commission that reviews exterior changes. We tell you early whether your address is in a district and what that means for panel placement, before you spend time on a design that cannot be approved.

Roof Not Ready? We Handle That Too.

A solar array should sit on a roof with life left in it. If yours is near the end, we replace it as part of the project so you are not pulling panels later.

Solar in Newport

Going Solar in Newport, Rhode Island

Newport has a local historic district created by city ordinance in 1965, and the City Council has since designated other local historic zones. Property owners planning exterior work inside a local historic district must first request a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic District Commission, a volunteer body appointed by the City Council and advised by the city’s Historic Preservation Planner. Whether your home is inside a district is something you can check by address on the city’s historic district map, and it is the first thing we check too.

Here is the honest part. The Commission has published a policy statement on solar panels for properties in the historic districts. The version we found says roof-mounted panels are typically not allowed, that panels which cannot be seen from the ground will generally meet Newport’s standards, and that panels should not go on a roof visible from the street or on prominent slate, standing seam metal, wood shingle or tile roofs. The copy we found has a blank adoption date, so treat the details as guidance and confirm the current policy with the city’s Preservation Planner. In practice that means some Newport homes in a district will not get approval for a front-facing roof array, and we will say so plainly rather than sell you a layout that fails review.

For a home outside the local historic districts, the process is the standard Rhode Island one. Rhode Island requires every municipality to use a single statewide solar permit application that covers both the building and electrical permits, in effect since January 1, 2018. Newport takes permit applications through its online E-Permitting Portal, run through the Building Inspections office at 43 Broadway, and electrical permits are applied for the same way. We prepare and submit the filing for you.

Rhode Island Energy is the electric utility for the state’s homes outside Block Island and the Pascoag district, and your net metering account and interconnection run through it. With net metering, power your system sends to the grid is credited to your account and offsets what you draw later. Rhode Island also has a separate Renewable Energy Growth program that pays under a long-term tariff, and it cannot be combined with net metering on the same system. We compare both against your actual bills and put the assumptions in writing.

FAQ

Newport Solar Questions, Answered

Does Rooftop Power install solar in Newport, RI?
Yes. Rooftop Power is based in Warwick, Rhode Island, and serves homeowners across the state, including Newport. Our in-house crews handle the design, the permit paperwork, the utility interconnection and the installation.
Who is my electric utility in Newport?
Rhode Island Energy delivers electricity to most Rhode Island homes, and your solar interconnection and net metering account run through it. We confirm the utility from your bill before we design anything.
How does net metering work for a Rhode Island home?
When your panels produce more than the house is using, the extra is sent to the grid and credited on your Rhode Island Energy account. Those credits offset the power you draw later, including in winter when production is lower. We size the system from your actual bills.
What is the difference between net metering and the Renewable Energy Growth program?
They are separate state paths. Net metering credits your own bill. Renewable Energy Growth pays a fixed rate for the power your system produces under a long-term tariff. You choose one for a given system, not both, and we run the comparison against your numbers.
How do I get a solar permit in Newport?
Newport takes permit applications through its online E-Permitting Portal, run by the Building Inspections office at 43 Broadway, and electrical permits go through the same portal. We prepare and submit the statewide solar permit application and follow the job through inspection. If your home is in a local historic district, a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic District Commission comes first.
What is the Rhode Island statewide solar permit?
Rhode Island requires every municipality to use one statewide solar permit application, which covers both the building and electrical aspects of a solar PV system. It has been required since January 1, 2018. We prepare and submit it for you.
Can I put solar panels on a house in Newport’s historic district?
Possibly, but it takes more review than most towns. The Historic District Commission reviews exterior changes through a Certificate of Appropriateness. The solar policy statement we found favors placements that cannot be seen from the street and discourages panels on slate, standing seam metal, wood shingle or tile roofs. Its copy has no adoption date, so we confirm current expectations with the city’s Preservation Planner. We will tell you if your roof is unlikely to be approved.
How do I find out if my Newport home is in a historic district?
The city publishes a historic district map you can search by address. We also check it during your first call, since the answer changes the design, the timeline and the paperwork.
What do I need for a Historic District Commission application?
The city asks for a Certificate of Appropriateness request submitted online. The solar policy statement we found asks for panel cut sheets, an aerial view of the panel layout, mounting bracket details and the placement of any exterior equipment or battery. We assemble those with you.
What does it cost, and what financing do you offer?
We offer four ways to pay: loan, cash, PPA and lease, with $0 upfront on three of them. Rooftop Power installs the system, and third-party partners own the financing and billing on lease and PPA options. We put the full pricing and financing picture in writing before you commit.
What happens during a power outage?
Solar alone shuts off in an outage for line worker safety, so panels by themselves do not power the house when the grid is down. Pair the system with a battery and your essentials keep running. We tell you honestly whether a battery makes sense for your home.
Do you install batteries, EV chargers and generators too?
Yes. Along with residential solar we install battery storage, EV chargers and standby generators, and we handle roofing when a project calls for it, so the roof and the array can be one project.
